Q609: America's Next Top Mentor: Training for Project Managers to Help Others Help You

Objectives: What is mentoring?
What is coaching?
Methods for mentoring and coaching project team members.
Abstract: Description: Project managers have a team of developers, architects and customers involved in most projects. One of the PM's responsibilities is to mentor and train other project members on the standards and responsibilities during the project. Very few technical roles are purely technical these days. Developers are also business analysts, project managers are facilitators and testers and everyone coordinates with multiple IT groups to assist in a successful application implementation. When new team members join the project and/or company they usually have the most contact with the project manager and therefore I've found that it's most natural for the PM to become a mentor.

Knowledge and experience enables the project manager to mentor colleagues by virtue of learning from their own past mistakes or as easy as giving the tip of the day to learn about the business and processes.
