114: Flawless Logical to Physical Data Model Transformations
Bert Scalzo , Quest Software    Biography

Objectives: Top ten modeling mistakes to avoid when converting from logical to physical model
Better physical database design
How to spot bad data modeling designs quickly
Abstract: Attendees will learn patterns to spot, pitfalls to avoid and rules to apply in order to more successfully translate logical models into physical models for their target database platform. Although data modeling has been around for nearly 30 years, the issues covered here continue to plague database applications. Topics include key/index design, inheritance (i.e. super and sub types), normalization, derivations and denormalization. Attendees will learn how to apply these techniques using Quest's QDesigner as they map a simple OLTP application's logical model into an Oracle 9i physical model. Data modelers, database developers and even DBA's will find this presentation informative and useful. Attendees should have at least a basic understanding of data modeling and relational databases.
