128: Disaster Recovery Options – Dataguard Versus Tivoli or EMC
Sumit Sengupta , EDS    Biography

Objectives: When to use Oracle Datagurad and when to avoid it.
Rman integration with 3rd party MML tool like Tivoli Storage Manager and EMC's timefinder
How to handle DR for ASM based database storage.
Abstract: This presentation discusses in detail two Disaster Recovery options, compares them with Data guard and discusses lessons learned. A brief overview of Oracle dataguard, and its evolutions from version 7.3 ( called standby then ) through 11g and comparison between Logical and Physical Dataguard options will be discussed.

Fundamental concepts of IBM's Tivoli Storage Manager tool, its catalog, concepts of forever incremental backup and archive operations. Backup and archive retention policy and management of storage pools. TSM with Rman backup and restore process. Possible pitfalls in DR restore – and best practices for TSM/ Oracle DR restore.

Volume based replication using EMC's BCV/ Timefinder. Using BCV for database backups with and without RMAN . How ASM complicates the DR operations. Best practice from EMC/Oracle. ASM 11g new features that helps BCV replication.
